HAURAKI CREW COME ASHORE
Queen’s Birthday Weekend marked
40 years since Radio Hauraki’s
final broadcast from the Tiri II in
international waters. In June 1970,
Hauraki’s land-based DJs were
flown to the boat for a special live
72-hour radio extravaganza.
Here Good Guys Barry Knight,
Peter Telling, Ian Magan and Ian
Johnston squeeze into the tiny
studio for the final programme.

Radio Hauraki was New Zealand’s one and only pirate radio station, which broadcast from international waters in the Hauraki Gulf, near the city of Auckland, between 1966 and 1970. Back in the 1960s all radio stations were controlled and operated by a Government agency – the New Zealand Broadcasting Corporation – which refused to grant a private licence to any potential competitor.                                  More.....
